And the swans come back to capistrano.
The first of Bewick's swans have arrived on the island two weeks earlier than last year. The swans are traditionally an indicator of the harshness of the upcoming winter. Last year's winter was the worst in 31 years according to an article on MSN, so they're saying this year's is going to be worse than last year's. I'm eating cereal right now.
Russian Hat Man is playing games with me. He came in yesterday with NO pieces of flair on his coat BUT he had multiple rings on each finger of each hand. All were very sparkly, some rainbow jeweled, one was in the shape of a marijuana leaf. I don't know what he's playing at. He ain't hard.
EDIT: Seven hours later....
I went in for an hour and a half to help out with the lack of staff...blah blah blah. Today, the funny thing of note is about color. Purple and white to be specific. Today is a day to wear purple if you are in support of anti-bullying stuff particularly in regards to the people who've been bullied/beaten up/killed because they're gay. Today is also some guy's 21st birthday and in the hour and a half I worked in the store, 10 manboys came in to purchase white clothing. But they didn't come in all at once. As soon as one left, another or two would come in 5 to 10 minutes later. So I got curious, and found out that it is for a birthday and that there'll be a big group of manboys out tonight by the river wearing all white. What's also funny about this is that we didn't have any men's trousers in that color. So all these manboys had for options were the women's trousers. Bellbottoms, bootcut, linen, denim weave, slacks.... and yoga pants. I had to tease the manboy that bought the yoga pants and the manboy who tried to buy the pantyhose. He was going to wear shorts and thought he'd do just as well as the girls do with pantyhose. I even sold a white bathrobe to a nanboy who was very happy to have it... and no kidding! It's freezing today!

Look ahead
This week is shaping up to be an interesting one. Is likely that I didn't make the shortlist for Macmillan Academy in Middlesbrough and I will know by Wednesday night if I interview with Wellfield Community School on Thursday.
Dan is in Colorado this week for another AMO conference. Yay for him!
I have been looking at other places to rent as well as couches. We think it'd be a good idea to have a three bedroom home but if we don't move then we're buying a bigger couch. Our current couch is an IKEA two seater. Blech. I hate it! And possibly buy a new(er) car where Dan can actually sit in it without having to hit his head on the car's ceiling each time there's a bump in the road. However, much of the decision on the when and how to go about this is somewhat dependent on when (and to some extent, where) I start working. I'm still waiting on the Fibbies background/fingerprint check.
I found another job offering in Durham. The position is "Head of History" for the Durham School. I'm going to apply anyways even if it does start in September 2011. I read the job description and it isn't anything that I haven't had some experience doing. Anyway, the application deadline is in November. For a position that starts next school year. Which tells me that they place a pretty high priority in their method and choice of hire. Also, part of the interview process is to teach a lesson to the students. I'm psyched about that. I just think it is really neat as a measuring tool of a potential candidate's abilities. Most likely they'll do an internal hire, but I'll give it a shot anyway.
All in all, I'm pretty good considering I live in an interesting combination of early to mid-20th century facilities and early 21st century technology.
Just finished reading "I am Number Four". Movie comes out in February. BOOOOOOOOOOOOONG! Would like to see "Blue Valentine"

Night Out
Dan and I got to go out for the first time in half a year (maybe more, who's counting really?) and it was fun. We went to play poker at someone's house and lost the money but worth it. We had a fantastic babysitter, Lisa. Lisa is an assistant at Natalie's school, in the Sunshine Club. We so smart! We get someone that Natalie knows and is comfortable with! Lisa told us that Natalie was great and that she had no trouble with Lisa being there instead of us.
So this morning, we attempt to talk to Natalie about it.
"I played with my teacher."
Works for me.
Natalie drew this and said it was daddy.

Kiddo is soooo smart!
As SciMan said in his email: "This, as far as we know, is the first of Kiddo writing her own name... We did not tell her what letters to draw, we just asked if she could write her name."
I'm pretty dang proud of my kiddo. We had just finished a poetry cut and paste of which you can barely see in the upper left hand corner. Optional homework *grin*.
While my kid does not play with others yet, she does play alongside them, doesn't hit them and she can write her name. I wonder how many of the others can say that?

Another job application
Yeah, I'm doing it again today. Gonna fill out the paperwork and mail it. Can't wait to get started. Just call me Sisyphus.

Yankee Doodle and Good King Wenceslas sound the same
And Russian Hat Man had FOURTEEN pieces of flair across his tummy! He came in, looked at the bric-a-brac shelves and left without buying anything. And (to my way of thinking) a crazy Irish woman came in and shared her family tree when she heard my accent. I now know of an Irish pub in Connecticut. She inquired about the wallpaper, asking me the same question twice but they bracketed her lineage.
Natalie continues to improve.

I did 17 things today!
This is my girl!
Nothing happened today other than the following:
1. Woke up at 3 am crying because Natalie was a zombie.
2. Stayed up and finished book: Chris Kuzneski "The Secret Crown". Meh
3. Sat and looked at the wall for 30 minutes.
4. Decided to finally give in and put in HP OotP DVD... Have now decided that OotP is my Prozac-Valium cocktail of wonders.
5. Woke up to a huge thumping crash at 7 am.
6. Rushed upstairs to find a sheepish three year old girl who then invites me for a cuddle by saying "You want cuddle?"
7. Made non-zombie child breakfast and watched Twinkle Wish adventure *again*
8. Got child in car (YAY!) and drove (YAY!) to St Oswald's (pictured above, YAY!)
9. Came home and washed dishes, did a load of laundry, watched West Wing, season 2
10. Went to Charity Shop and did my deal there for four hours.
11. Picked up girl.
12. Rode bus homewards and stopped at grocery store for ingredients for stir-fry (yum om nom nom)
13. Made dinner.
14. Ate dinner.
15. Cleared dinner.
16. Talked to husband.
17. Sat down to computer and started this post.
