Fun Video Friday

Oh you crazy Scandinavian kids! Summer's too long for your parents.

Friday, 19 August 2011

I drank the Kool-Aid...

...and it tastes all pink, green, and blue.

...because pink and green and blue were the colors for the day.

Took Kiddo to the park nextdoortoournewhouse! Packed a picnic bag (Thanks SJ!) and felt content after arrival. I had the kind of contentment that is a barrier to ever leaving this country.

DO YOU KNOW HOW FUCKING LONG IT'S BEEN SINCE I'VE BEEN CONTENT?

Too long.

So here's some eyecandyporn for Friday's Fone Fdump

BEFORE

AFTER

I highly recommend to you Brookeshields wannabees that you immediately go find your nearest Indian lady and beg her to thread your eyebrows. If no Indian lady can be found, try some Iranians. Oh so much better than wax. Only, I recommend you not go get it done if you've just done really awesome eyemakeup. Smudged City. Ah, imperfections. How I love mine.

When Dad came for his visit (<3!!!), he brought the Lego set he bought me in 1988, The Black Monarch's Castle.
And every good castle has to have a dragon... SO I BUILT THAT BADASS DRAGON! Design and implementation all from my brain...no showsies from a how-to booklet! Look, look! He even doubles as a T-Rex!

Also of note... We hosted poker for the first time in over 3 years. And here's what's cool about it => present at poker were the following people: A Cuban, an Englishman, a Taiwanese, a Belgian, a Frenchwoman, and two Americans.

This is the Cuban! They really do exist outside of Cuba and Florida.
Guess who won?
THE REALLY STYLISH FRENCHWOMAN OF COURSE!

Anyway. Like I was saying... if I was saying anything, which I doubt, my point is that I've now entered the phase of the ex-pat {wait, do I even qualify as 'ex-pat'?} experience where I'm reluctant to contemplate going home. I've found myself making plans that do not involve considering a move homewards. I enjoyed having people here to visit and found myself wishing for more time so that I could show them more of what I find wonderful about this place, like hot chocolate from a bar/lounge that really should be called hot liquid cake.

I really do still hate a lot about this country...and if last week's riots were any indication, so too do a lot of other people and for probably what's tantamount to the same things as me. Like, for instance, a 23 year old guy gets jail time for knowingly passing on herpes to his now ex-girlfriend. He got 14 months.

14 months?

How's that going to do anything to his future behavior? Would that deter you if you were determined to use a disease as biological revenge? It's just not common sense. The jails are basically full, from what I've read and it's not solving the fundamental problem. Does anyone even know what the problem truly is? I most likely don't, but I've got the outsider's perspective and shit ain't looking good from out here.

When I read about this crap or when I watch the result of economic and opportunity poverty unfold, my gut response is "I gotta get out of here." When I have to call the NHS Health Visitors to cancel an appointment that they set up but that I didn't want in the first place, I'm all like  ಠ_ಠ .

But then there's being in places like this...

And this....

And this...

And so, yeah. I may have drank the Kool-Aid already...and I didn't realize it.

Best Birthdays Ever on Fun Video Friday

I watched this video and took something for the headache and therefore, am better. It's probably a tumor though. So. Another year. Another birthday. I'm 32 today. A factor of two. Two to the fifth to be precise. I slept in, got up at 9. And I still have no idea when I'm going to get to watch this movie in the theater. FML.

This birthday is an improvement on last year's when I knew absolutely no one outside of my husband, Kiddo, and the bartender at the pub. Pathetic.

But this year, I know people. I've been here long enough to get a group of women to go out for a night on the 'toon. Tomorrow night, I celebrate my 32nd with the 1st Inaugural Mid-Summer's Geordie Night on the 'Toon.

Today, I got an email from a friend with birthday greetings and it got me thinking about birthdays and specifically, mine. Then I immediately started categorizing what I thought were my best birthdays ever...

30th: It was a surprise birthday party. Honestly had no idea. Mom, The Man, and bestRealLifeFriendinNorman pulled it off.

25th: Spent it with close family and friends at Incredible Pizza Company, playing arcade and pier games, go-karts, miniature golf. It was like going backward in time.

21st: Derp. Of course, but what makes it great is that Mom bought dinner for all my friends that night as a surprise gesture. And then I got greatfaced drunk.

18th: First time I spent my birthday away from my family. I was at a competitive workshop for TV broadcasting. In retrospect, I might should've stuck with that field. I won two first place prizes. It was the first of many times I refused to listen to the universe. But it helped me realize that I like being on my own on my birthday if that's what I want to do...that I'm not required to be among family and friends on my birthday.

15th: Special birthday, the 'golden' birthday. Some call it the 'Champagne Birthday' or 'Star Birthday'. Had tons of family all together eating at The Spaghetti Warehouse. Sounds gross, but at the time, was one of the best restaurants in Bricktown. The cake was awesome.

10th: Mainly because moved out of single digit.

7th: Five words: WHITE WATER BAY AND SUNBURN!!! And then El Chico's!

4th: In the tiny kitchen, Mom, Dad, Grandpa and Grandma were all together. There are no pictures of this day that I've ever seen, but that's okay. I don't need one to remember where they were all standing because I can recall it clearly. Grandpa leaning against the sink, holding his plate and eating carefully. Like he always did. All the other adults standing in the kitchen or sitting in the living room, also tiny. I got the prettiest Barbie that day. I'd been outside playing and I remember the color of the paper plates we used for the cake. I remember wanting to drink my punch from one of my kitchen set's toy cup... and my mom let me!

And tomorrow is Kiddo's 4th birthday party. I wonder what she'll remember. I'll be sure to take a few pictures, just in case.

What's your favorite birthday memory?

Fun Video Friday with a Side of Sunshine Herpes

As always, there are a few things one must do to accept this award:
1. Thank the person who gave you this award and link back to them
2. Tell us something about yourself
3. Nominate 10 other bloggers
4. Contact these other bloggers and let them know they've received this award

1. Thank you Mallori! Your Life is Beautiful  brings me sunshine everytime I read it.  I'm really happy for you on your "big girl panties" journey.

2. I will never ever again buy new pants when I can go to a tailor. Best shopping experience I ever had was just this week. I took some pants to be taken in and when I picked them up after, they fit! No dressing rooms, no harried and disinterested salespeople. Just me and the lady who efficiently caressed my hips.

3. All of the following bring sunshine to cold, grey,  and gloomy County Durham. The nominees are:

Bouncin' Barb- Barb, your last post was full of onions!

Lance- who thinks his blog can beat up your blog... and he's write.

Natalie at My Blog is Boring- kill that gal with kindness or as I prefer, aggressive friendly.

Stephanie of the Odd Duck- If I could pick a style, I'd pick rockabilly chic too.

Ms Blase' of Adult Awkwardness- What are holidays if not to eat the special food for it...um, hello? Passover?

Somnia of You are Loved - Keep on singing in that shower, girl!

Katie@ChickenNoodleGravyTrainBoatCasino- You know, you really should take my button down. But because of you and ML, traffic has increased to tens.

TexaGermaFinlaNadian- Girl, you are too funny. And thanks for having my back.

Tai Tai- Like everyone else in the world, I'm sure you've got problems. However, you live in a travel brochure. No sympathy, girl. None.

Michon Michon/Jules- I like the new direction you're going, I liked the old one too. So far, so good. Damn, I just thought of a Dave Matthews Band song .. so much to say, so much to say...I find sometimes it's easier to be myself, sometimes I find it's better to be somebody else.
4. Consider yourselves contacted.

And now for something completely different but typical for Friday
Watch the whole thing...and smile the whole time.

In Soviet Russia, books read you!

Dancing with Abandon, The Barking Cat, and your weekly dose of Blog Herpes

You know that sentimental Purkey quote about love, life and dancing and watching?  I think this guy is the only guy who really lives that poem like he means it.

This kid dances at his bus stop like this every day.

What do you do everyday with such joyful abandon?

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaand because cats on the internet is what makes the sun rise and set (NEVER A MISCOMMUNICATION!) I leave you with the cat who wished to be a dog.

I totally love how he got all embarrassed from being caught barking.

***

Round two of Blog Herpes Innoculation - In hopes of immunization...I give you

From Jessey at The Minute Man's Wife  and Kristina at A Perfect Dose of Life

The rules for this particular award are pretty easy.
1) Tell you who gave it to me.
2) Put up a link to their blog.
3)Pay it Forward to five more bloggers.

I had no idea TMMW's real name was Jessey until recently, but because of the unique world created by the online social network that is blogging, I think I do know her and quite well. Doesn't hurt that she gets close to telling all, either. Her life hasn't been all that sunshinelollipoppy recently and I hope you will stop by her blog to bestow some lovin'.

I mentioned Kristina in the last blog herpes giveaway because she was a victim awardee. Always, she is a happy part of the time of day when I'm reading Google reader. And when I get back to the states, I'm buying a Tazo Rooibus chai for her. I kick her ass at Words with Friends half the time. The other half, she pulls the rug out from under me. CURSE YOU KMSTREETER12509!

The following cats are good bloggers. Go forth and stalk.

  • TriGirl at Tri-ing to be Athletic  An inspiring amateur athlete who blogs about her mishaps on her feet and stationary bike via drawings.
  • Nicole at Truth and Circumstances and Ninja Mom REAL ULTIMATE POWER IS NINJA MOM! She could totally take down a hippopotamus with her mom eyes.
  • Breann at Life and Love of a ParrotHead New to me sorta-ish, but it's high time we get to know one another. Plus, she's an architect or rather, a designer for an architecture firm. I have a soft spot for architects....so she qualifies.
  • Slidecutter Patti at Another Cookie Please It's said about her a bunch, but this woman is one of the most positive individuals even with her past experiences with her family. I know what she experienced in second hand way, and I wish I had had her kind of grace. She leaves the best comments and is a pretty good writer in her own right.
  • Dr Cynicism at Cynicism 101 He's basically me if I was a college professor and I blogged about the stupid shit college freshmen utter and commit. Sometimes I wish I had a teaching job just so I could say, 'Hey Dr C...guess what Herpette said to Derpette today?' because he'd totally be like "FML, I'm getting them when they graduate, right?" Plus, he's a writer for Sprocket Ink... creme de la creme of blogworld.

Steve McQueen and Round One of Blog Herpes Innoculation

I think I'm hosted by TexaGermaNadian today for Frackin' Friday... Geordiespeakeasyness. Go check it out!

This is greatness for Fun Video Friday. And here's why. Cats are great. Steve McQueen was great. A cat named Steve McQueen can therefur only be greatness. This guy made a TV intro for his cat's life...Wouldn't you watch it? I would, for like three episodes. Because then it'd be canceled and I couldn't watch it after that.

See? Greatness.

I don't remember when my first Blog Herpes was bestowed, but I do know that I am the hipster that coined the mint terminology Blog Herpes. Give props where props are due people.

I've been given several awards recently. I've finally recovered...I get around. You should leave comments so I can come visit your blog so I can decide to bestow upon thee some Blog Herpes. You will love it. Here's Round 1:

Missy is a sweet lil gal mint posh totty who doesn't get her knickers in a twist if her tash is macked on by a chavette. She lives in sunny County Durham and is a teacher! Who could afford to go away on a holiday/minibreak to NYC! Anyway, I'd like to thank Missy in all her poshtottinessglory and maybe someday I can buy her a pint after work. I don't think she's banned from Wetherspoons but if she is, then we'll just go to The Swan and Three Cygnets. Haway now, go on and visit her. She's a canny lass who always helps me with my Geordiespeak.

Here's where I rub 7 random facts onto you like palm oil...

  1. I have dreams about people dying and I wake up crying. Usually, it's either my mam or kiddo. Also, I have dreams where my teeth fall out. I should floss more.
  2. I got a Monday job working for couple who own a chef/beautician supply store. I don't know more than that. I just know that I'm going to be doing stuff, like invoices and mailing packages. Yay for college.
  3. I think people who want to move to England have only either seen it in the movies or have just visited London.
  4. It's likely that I still hold the record for the most books checked out at the Ada Public Library ...for one summer...I would like to say that I hope someone has beaten it, because that was a long time ago...but I really don't.
  5. I don't have any fancy bras. Just white, black, and beige. I wear the beige one when I wear white shirts.
  6. I play Words with Friends like a mad fiend. My current opponents are kmstreeter12509 and sleepyjean10. Get the app so you can play with us. It's like Scrabble. I'm mollieisokinuk
  7. I used to have to beg The Man for Indian food excursions. Now, he likes it more than I do. I'm still more gustatorily and culinarily adventurous than he is.

And now I pass it on to 7 people who I don't have to pimp out, but how else would you know why I like them?
I'm a new follower of hers; around two or three weeks. She's renovating her house among other stuff, like experiencing life and living it. But I love watching house renovations. So, I'm excited to see what's in store for it. Life, schmife. Srsly, she's great.

Ah, my portableScrabble nemesis. I really like this kiddo. She's moving to Colorado. Good luck with that! She's just an all around positive kiddo and while she's not really a kiddo, she's not old like me...so I can call her a kiddo. We're about even at Scrabble....maybe I have the edge?

One of the best writers out there. Am waiting for her to tap me on the shoulder and ask me to be her readerslasheditor. I'm cheap and fast. (heh heh, that's what she said) She also onceuponatime said some really nice things about me, unprompted by an award meme or anything...just because...and that made my day, week, and month. I just have to keep living up to that praise, shazambooie!!

Michelle is an expat who actually likes living over here...prolly because she's here for the duration, with marriage to a native and kids who are natives.  Also, she's a fellow Oklahoman who lives in a reno'd pub. HonesttoBetsy! She's flabbergastingly professional and I always experience a frisson of excitement whenever she drops by my amateur hour.

When she posts, which is not often, you know that you're reading a well-thought-out, crafted gem of several paragraphs. It's food for thought. And now I'm full.

I like my Twitter conversations with LeighAnn. She's the reason why I started back up again. She writes for several journals, plus her blog, plus mommying twins and a spare. And she looks good doing it...'it' being the classy manner in which she simultaneously parents and ignores children. My guru. Her new name is Guru Latortwipina

Okay, I'm done.

A Trolldad, A Foul-mouthed 10 year old, and Day 28

Best link of the day: http://waveatthebus.blogspot.com/

Trolldad waves at his son's bus every morning. The son's in high school. So awesomely embarrassing! I think I would've loved it if my friends did too.

Fun Video for Friday because Sunday should never be allowed to not let Friday go unacknowledged.

Found it here. Why are cursing kids so funny?

Day 28- A book you wish you'd never read.

I wish I'd never read books on Friday or Saturday nights whilst I was a young and vibrant girl in college. There were many a night where I stayed in and read a book, instead of going out with friends.

Okay, I really have no idea if that's a true story or if I'm just place-holding. Or if it's because I really don't want to tell you the answer that pops into my head EVERY time I ask myself what is a book I wish I'd never read.

It's not very shocking, truthfully. It's the Bible.  I've read enough of it to know what it is about but not enough to have any intelligent discourse about it without sounding pedantic.

I hope that many of the things I believe are profound in nature...and this results in my inability to discuss them without being run roughshod by someone (general, could be anyone) who thinks they know more than me just because they've read the Bible and therefore all things spouted in quote format by said typical person, I cannot logically take as empirical. It could be that what is said is true, but it's the attitude of that said type that I cannot abide.

And so, I'm not going to say more than this: I wish I hadn't read it, but I did and that has made all the difference.

Days 11 & 12, including Fun Video Friday

CHEESY LYRIC ALERT- C-c-c-c-combo! 1UP!

Days go by and still I think of you
Given in the lines, written in the pages
Days when I couldn't live my life without you

Day 11- The Book that made you fall in love with reading

Ah, reading. Blessing and curse. I've already read the two books I checked out this week. Reading is like heroin, I guess. My own personal brand of heroin (GAG!)

I have always been in love with reading since day one of my life... so no one particular book gets this honor.

Day 12- A book so emotionally draining you couldn't complete it or had to set aside for a bit
Yeah, this day is one that I hate to admit ... that I couldn't power through, but the book was called "Damage" and I have no real inclination to say more about it. I couldn't even tell you who it's by.

Rented The Neverending Story and watched it with kiddo. That child, she's a hardcore little girl. I used to get scared by G'mork... not her. And in the Swamps of Sadness, she's shouting at Atreyu, "Don't be afraid! It's just a turtle!"

Hell, I was tearing up whenever the Ivory Tower was on the screen... Kiddo's contemplating her navel. She liked it though, but I don't think it beats My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic in her mind.

And the following is for all you Bon Jovi lovers (I'm looking at you TexaG!) and appreciators of the great years of Techno... I submit the sublime Orbital for Fun Video Friday

Fun Video Friday: The Disciple of Bon Qui Qui... 30 DoB- Day 4

Fun Video Friday is inspired by today's events at work.

And I can't friggin embed it. It's been disabled by request. Really, YouTube? Only 44+million views and anonymous users wants to disallow embedding? I circumvent you! Here's a link...

http://youtu.be/jZkdcYlOn5M

So this lady says to me today, "You have the Durham look."  She was smiling but that's still no clue whether that's a compliment or an insult. If compliment, "girl, I will cut you."  If insult, "girl, I. WILL. CUT. YOU."

Day 4- A Book That Reminds You Of Home

Campbell's Casseroles Cookbook- board book style.

source

It usually ships in 1 business day. All the recipes are good except for the carrot one. Don't cook that one.

When kiddo was a small kiddo, this is the book I'd give her as I was puttering around in the kitchen. She made a great cookbook holder. Aaaaaah. Campbell's Soup Casseroles.... the mainstay of many American dinners.

I didn't bring this with me overseas for one big reason. They don't have Campbell's here. They've got Heinz.

EAT HEINZ!

I have this idea that it wouldn't taste the same if I used Heinz. Fear. That's what that feeling is! So weird.

Blogger says my 30 DoB-Day 3 will be back soon... well, they say that any post written after such and such time on Wednesday will be returned post haste, post hoc ergo propter hoc, quid pro quo E pluribus unum. Agricola filliam vocat. Anyway, I know how much you want to read day 3.

Fun Video Friday vol. 5

For the bazillion of you keeping up with British politics... and this may be a repost of sorts... can't remember, don't feel like looking for it anyways...

Makes sense right? To me, the Alternative Vote seems very respectful of voters' desires. But guess what?

There was a vote today on this issue...whether to have "First Past the Post" or the Alternative Vote. Would you believe that it didn't pass? Here's a lovely article about it.

Also, can you credit that a good majority of voters believe the AV to be "too hard" or "too complicated"?

If it were me, I think I wouldn't appreciate the fact that someone believes me to be too dumb to number my candidate preferences from greatest to least, 1,2, 3.

It is such an invalid argument to have such credence, thus allowing it the win. I'm soapboxing now, by the way.

It appears to me that many of the voters were not completely informed about the choices placed in front of them.  And that my friends, is a major no no. How do I know that many were ill-informed about this referendum? Ah ha! I have many, many customers today and a fair few of that group who bothered to vote (this isn't Australia where they make you vote) said they voted against the AV.

Because they thought it sounded "too hard" OR (granted just two people, husband and wife, elderly) that it was "confusing".

LE (GRIP MY HAIR AND TEAR IT OUT FROM THE ROOTS) SIGH

How about some more videos? Maybe try to get uplifted with Disney's Mean Girls?

Aaaaahhh. Much better now. BUT! Let us have some science! I so enjoyed doing this in the hallways at my school. 10-15 feet away, I could puff a kid's ears. FUN!

It's the Final Countdown...wait for it...

Thank you University of Delaware's premier air band, "Wind", for this most excellent example of how funny humanity is...specifically, boys.

It is especially awesome at 3:21

Yeah, I know it's old, but whatev.

It is the final countdown...less than 24 hours. I bet there's some major nerves in the Middleton Family right now. Never in a million years would I want to be in their situation. Not much I can do to prevent it, other than the normal "live-in-the-US-and-send-my-child-to-public-school-and-a-state-run-university" preventative measures. You know, just keeping it real.

Got the outfit and "bunting". We will have hats for before the ceremony and tiaras for after, because that's what I decided. It makes sense to me to wear them after, because that's when KissMeKate Catherine will be a princess, in the public view if not the legal view.

And here's what you can be looking for...
Favorite Picture, hands down (-_-)

Inadvertent Awesomeness Alert: I'm a friggin' teapot!
Drop and give me twenty! Or two tenners, if you don't have any large bills.
I've never owned a maxidress before. That thing is so damn comfortable. So yeah, large bright print dress, white hat and red roses...I should blend in well right?

WRONG! Because I will also have a lovely mask of KissMeKate Catherine's mug, er...face. And I will be rebel yelling! Because I am awesome!

Uh, oh yeah! Thanks for the follows on Twitter. Keeping it real, 140 characters at a time.

Also I would like to take this moment to have a wonderful freakout moment with you... While the scale hasn't moved in a while and honestly, neither have I... that there dress? It's a size 12, UK. Which makes it a size...10 in US sizes!  So that's cool.. because while I have no idea what it was before, it's still nice to know now. And it makes up for the huge ass I have.

One last thing, my husband's first words when he got home yesterday were, "that looks awesome!" Normally, he says "you look awesome" when I do something to my hair and put on makeup. I never get called "that".

Such a lovely feeling. Because, if you are a Will & Grace fan, you may recall the episode when Grace's husband leaves for Guatemala with a hot doctor. Jack calls attention to it by shrieking "your husband's going to Guatemala with THAT!"

I leave you with the following submission for Fun Video Friday...reminds me of my brother.

Fun Video Friday vol. 3

The following is a joke forwarded to me by my grandmother. I'm a third generation (maybe fourth if a great grandparent went) Sooner.

The year is 2016 and the United States has just elected the first woman, an Oklahoma University graduate, as President of the United States, Susan Sooner.

A few days after the election the president-elect calls her father and says, 'So, Dad, I assume you will be coming to my inauguration?'

'I don't think so. It's a 30 hour drive, your mother isn't as young as she used to be, and my arthritis is acting up again.'

'Don't worry about it Dad, I'll send Air Force One to pick you up and take you home. And a limousine will pick you up at your door.'

'I don't know. Everybody will be so fancy. What would your mother wear?'

Oh Dad, replies Susan, 'I'll make sure she has a wonderful gown custom-made by the best designer in New York .'

'Honey,' Dad complains, 'you know I can't eat those rich foods you and your friends like to eat.'
The President-to-be responds, 'Don't worry Dad. The entire affair is going to be handled by the best caterer in New York, I’ll ensure your meals are salt free Dad, I really want you to come.'

So Dad reluctantly agrees and on January 20, 2017, Susan Sooner is being sworn in as President of the United States. In the front row sits the new president's Dad and Mom. Dad noticing the senator sitting next to him leans over and whispers, 'You see that woman over there with her hand on the Bible, becoming President of the United States.’

The Senator whispers back, 'Yes I do.'

Dad says proudly, 'Her brother played football at OU.

So that's an oldie but a goodie. Like a Bob joke. "Who's the guy with Bob?"

I'm a fan of Stephen Colbert. Have been since waaaaaaaaaaaaaay back when the Daily Show had just changed over from Craig Kilbourn to Jon Stewart. I'm also a big fan of improv and WLiiA is a dear favorite of mine. Colbert guest stars in this episode and we learn he can speak German fairly well.

At one point he quotes Mein Kampf. Hilarity ensues.
